Top Brokers to invest with 2022

Not all brokers are created equal, and neither are any two traders. It’s important to find, not just a good broker, but one that lines up with your needs and goals as a trader. To that end, we’ve picked some of the top brokers for 2022 for every type of investor.

The Beginner

Robinhood
Was there any question about what the pick would be here? The no-fee, broker has seen tremendous growth in terms of reach and features over the last few years, and is a fantastic option for beginners. Robinhood may have lost some of it’s edge in recent years, as many competitors have hit the scene and big players have adopted a $0 fee pricing model, but the minimalist user interface makes for a stress-free introduction into investing.
Fees: $0
Account Minimum: $0
Technology: iOS & Android platforms and web

We Liked

  • $0 commission trading. When you’re getting started, every penny counts, and the fewer fees you pay, the better.
  • Intuitive and accessible UI for stocks and options (with support for covered strategies).

We Didn’t Like

  • Limited charts and alerts.
  • Research and scanning tools and options are very limited.

The Day Trader

Interactive Brokers
With a powerful set of tools via their TWS platform, low commissions, and a surprisingly good mobile client, IB is a great platform for active traders looking to step up their game. Interactive Brokers has also joined in on the $0 commission for stocks and ETFs fray with their “Lite” offering, but whether you go with “Pro” or “Lite” will depend on your particulars, such as account size, trading frequency, and services needed. In recent years, IB has also lowered their minimum balance to $0, which is yet another incentive to dive in.
Fees: $0.00 commissions for “Lite” users and as low as $0.0005 per share for “Pro” users.
Account Minimum: $0
Technology: iOS & Android, Windows & Mac, and web

We Liked

  • Powerful trading platform.
  • Great pricing for active traders.
  • Customizable platform

We Didn’t Like

  • Complicated nickle-and-dime pricing for data subscriptions.
  • Dated-looking platform.
  • Lack of meaningful hotkey customization

The Options Trader

tastyworks.
Not to be confused with tastytrade, the financial network side of the house, tastyworks is an options-centric brokerage. The same folks that created and sold thinkorswim platform to TD Ameritrade, went on to found Dough, Inc., which in turn became tastyworks. TW offers a very unique take on how to visualize and place options trades, and makes them very accessible, for a low cost.
Fees: $1.00 per contract with a max per leg of $10.00 on the opening trade. The closing trade has a commission of $0.00
Account Minimum: $0
Technology: iOS & Android, desktop, and web

We Liked

  • Unique and intuitive new way to visualize and place orders on various options strategies.
  • Curated list of stocks based on option volatility.
  • The “Grid” view. Seriously, check it out.

We Didn’t Like

  • Limited tools outside of options.
  • Odd bugs (though none are breaking or have lead to us losing money).
  • Charts are extremely basic. And not in the way millennials use the word.

The Analytical Trader

TD Ameritrade
One of, if not the biggest reasons to use TD Ameritrade is the thinkorswim platform. Couple that with a broad selection of products, free data, and (as far as we’ve encountered), stellar customer service, and you’ve got yourself one of the most solid brokers out there.
Fees: $0 per trade
Account Minimum: $0
Technology: iOS & Android, desktop and web

We Liked

  • One of the most robust and feature-rich trading platforms out there.
  • Free level 1 & 2 data.
  • Great scanner and alert features

We Didn’t Like

  • Somewhat dated-looking web app and account management
  • While thinkorswim on desktop is amazing, the web platform, is honestly quite bad.
  • Not very customizable

The Rest

There are honestly several good alternatives out there worth checking out if none of the above are your cup of tea for whatever reason. A few worth pointing out are:

Ally Invest

Fees: $0
Account Minimum: $0
Technology: iOS & Android, desktop and web

TradeStation

Fees: $0 per trade
Account Minimum: $0
Technology: iOS & Android, desktop and web
